Three Cumberland County public schools have been awarded grants from the Stephen Shane Fincher Memorial Foundation.

The foundation awarded $500 grants to Glendale Acres Elementary School and Cape Fear High School. Glendale Acres plans to use the money to update its science and math book collection and Cape Fear High plans to create a science closet.

A $4,000 grant was awarded to Westarea Elementary School for a program called “Engineering is Elementary.”

The foundation awards grants to projects that promote science and mathematics and provides scholarships to students pursuing a degree from North Carolina State University’s School of Engineering.

The foundation honors the memory of Fayetteville Academy and N.C. State graduate Stephen Fincher, who died unexpectedly in 2008 at age 33.
